Summary |
Technical Information: From the 1950 Fall-Winter Brunswick Billiard Supplies and Equipment Catalog, page 20: The Brunswick Sport King Table is the quality table in the low price range. This newest member of Brunswick's family of fine billiard tables is fashioned in a clean, modern design, and constructed of selected cabinet woods. It is attractively finished in maroon with harmonizing tan aprons to blend with any decorative scheme. Its rails are beautiful, laminated walnut with a burn-resistant finish. The Sport King's massive base frame rests firmly on rugged, but gracefully tapered legs ... giving the table the rigidity and stability necessary for a perfect playing surface. Many of the quality features of Brunswick's more expensive tables are incorporated in the Sport King--famous Monarch cushions, for lively dependable cushion action--perfectly matched registered slates, for an absolutely true playing surface--top quality cloth, for accurate, long-lasting wear--plus all the skill and knowledge of championship table construction developed in Brunswick's 105 years of billiard experience. The Sport King is designed to please every player. It will respond to the delicate touch of a champion or to hard fast pocket play. The Sport King is built to last--it will take years of punishing play yet retain its smart appearance that attracts attention and invites play. Specifications for Sport King Tables: Legs: Four tapered legs (six on 5x10' tables) with laminated facings, are attractive in appearance. Aprons: Solid poplar aprons with a handsome lacquer finish. Four section ball rack in foot end of table holds 20 balls. The rack is conveniently located and exceptionally easy to use when racking balls. Finish: All exposed wood surfaces have a lacquer finish. Maroon colored legs and base frame aprons are a harmonizing tan. All concealed wood surfaces are finished with a moisture repellent. Style: Sport King Billiard Tables come in the following popular styles: 4x8', 4 1/2 x 9' pocket; 4x8' and 4 1/2 x 9' gully; 5x10' carom and 5x10' snooker. Base Frame: The sturdy massive base frame is constructed of selected wood ... consists of two side frames, two end frames and longitudinal stretchers. The two end frames, stretchers and horizontal cross members give a positive support to the slate bed. Slate: A 3-piece matched set of slates, one inch thick, same quality as used on more expensive tables. Each piece backed up by a heavy hardwood frame, is mounted on top of the base frame. Accurately drilled for rail bolts, slate is fastened to slate frame by concealed screws. Slate is tightly anchored to base frame. The bottom of slate frame is planed and top surface of slate ground to uniform thickness. Rails: 1 3/4" thick by 4 1/2" wide in the exposed surface, of selected cabinet woods. Individual rails can be quickly removed without dismantling aprons. Fitted with the world famous Monarch cushions for lively angle accuracy--the same kind of cushion used on the more expensive tables, and preferred by players everywhere. Mother of pearl sights located in proper positions. Castings: Aluminum castings with satin finish. Castings are smoothly rounded. Pockets: A one piece molded rubber pocket is provided for all pocket openings. Ball rack for pocket tables: Twenty ball rack in foot end of apron is furnished as standard equipment on pocket tables. Bridge Hook: Each table has two metal bridge hooks. Receiver box for gully tables: On gully tables, ball rack has extra compartment below ball storage compartments connected directly with the plastic gully tubes. Playing equipment: Cushion cloth is attached to rails. Wide selection of playing equipment is optional at catalog prices. Four features of new rail construction: 1. Rail bolts fasten directly through the slate into bottom of the rail, eliminating any vibration and increasing accuracy with perfect rebound angles. 2. Rail bolts are handy to get at--can be easily tightened by the operator at any time. It is not necessary to remove the table aprons to tighten rail bolts. 3. Cushion cloth is easier to attach at recovering time with the new type of rail construction. Each rail can be removed individually without dismantling aprons. 4. The new type of construction removes the danger of breaking expensive slate when fastening rails to the table. From the 1964 Brunswick Billiards sell sheet: Billiards has added "pop" appeal to the game's traditional top appeal--in bright, modern billiard centers that attract players of all ages; men, women, and youngsters alike. For the establishment desiring to retain the familiar flavor of the past in a setting of modern prestige appearance, Brunswick combines both in the Sport King table.
