Summary |
This is an advertisement for Phelan's Improved Billiard Tables and Combination Cushions, sold by Phelan & Collender at 63-69 Crosby St., New York, and 724-6 Montgomery St., San Francisco, California. The ad states that Phelan had been granted seven different patents for improvements in billiard tables by the U.S. Patent Office and one from the French government for improvements in billiard table cushions. The ad describes the "scientific accuracy" of the cushions and features an endorsement from French billiards player Claudius Berger, dated August 2, 1861, just months after the battle at Fort Sumter signaled the start of the Civil War. The endorsement states that Berger had just completed an eleven-month tour of the United States and found Phelan & Collender's "system of manufacture so superior, that I am happy to introduce their style of cushion into Paris." |
